Wall Street Organizes Simulated Cyber Attack

According to our sources an artificial cyber attack on about 40 Wall street companies will be carried out from 9am to 2:30pm on June 28, 2013. This exercise is organized by Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (better known as SIFMA), while the executors will be Cyber Strategies. The participants list includes not only the previously mentioned firms from Wall Street but also The Securities and Exchange Commission, The Department of Homeland Security, The Federal Reserve and finally the Treasury Department.

The participation price will vary from $1000 to $10,000, which will be calculated referring to the budget of the firm. Moreover, each company has to have at least three executives, which are responsible for business continuity, operations and information security.

Gottfrid Svartholm sentenced to two years

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, one of the creators of the file sharing website called Pirate Bay, was sentenced to two years in jail on Thursday. He was pledged guilty for hacking into computers at an organization that works for Swedish authorities and for making illegal money transactions.

The court described hacking as sophisticated and very extensive and claimed that sensitive systems were damaged. Although, convict himself denied the charges. Swedish court had already convicted him for internet piracy in 2009, but the hacker managed to hide in Cambodia until last year. After the extradition to Sweden Gottfrid Svartholm Warg had to do a one-year sentence for previous crimes, furthermore he also had to face the court for the new ones.

Data of 6M Facebook Users Exposed

Facebook is criticized again. This time the things that drew attention are security bug, which exposed user’s personal information, matching data between users and alleged collaboration with the government.

The source of the bug which caused the data leak is Download Your Information (DYI) tool. Although Facebook is now claiming that the problem is solved, six million users have already reluctantly shared their email addresses and phone numbers.

The information about the existing bug was reported to security site called Packet Storm by an unknown researcher. Later the site contacted Facebook, and it was forced to shut down the DYI service for a day to solve the problems before turning it on again.

Hayden claimed that the cyber attacks themselves don’t surprise him because US has a long history of fighting against organized groups, state-sponsored attackers or military units that use cyberespionage to damage networks or ongoing operations. The things that worry him are the goals and methods which are used because they are yet to be discovered. That is the main reason why this time the US government was caught unprepared.
