Nearly 290K Complaints Received by Online Crime Clearinghouse
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received less fraud complaints in 2012, but the volume of losses to victims grew.
The yearly statement of “Internet Crime Report” was announced on Tuesday. According to the IC3, a collaboration amongst FBI, National White Collar Crime Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance accepted 289,874 complaints last year. It accepted 310,000 complaints in 2011 and that was $485 million. Even if the number of complaints decreased in 2011, the losses increased by 8.3 percent according unverified sources.
The most popular complaints involved ransomware infections that imitate the FBI, and scareware applications that try to sell fake anti-virus products by stating the victim’s PC is supposedly infected.
